And, after two stressful years of not knowing where they were going to sleep from one week to the next, Gonzalez Hidalgo and her mother moved into subsidized housing. She benefited from the Greater Boston Food Bank’s “mobile market,” which came to NECC once a month to distribute fresh fruits and vegetables. She was able to get campus jobs, first at NECC’s bookstore and then as an orientation leader and a student programming assistant for student engagement. Gonzalez Hidalgo, a natural go-getter, worked hard and found help. I don’t know how I did it,” she says now. “That was the worst period, because she was so sick that I had it all on my plate. She took a city bus to school each day and then shuttle buses between campuses. She takes care of her mom while juggling an internship and a full-time course load. Gonzalez’ current short-course times in those events are hovering around the Nebraska all-time top-5 marks, so she should be able to come in and add value to the Huskers’ lineup from the outset of her collegiate career.Business major Carla Gonzalez Hidalgo has her work cut out for her. The Cornhuskers didn’t score in either the 100 or 200 back at 2015 B1G Championships. She is a member of the 2014-15 USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team. In addition, for the past three years Gonzalez has been stateside, swimming for the Fort Worth Area Swim Team (FAST) under the direction of swim coach Ron Forrest and at James Martin High School (in Arlington, Texas), training with coach Jon Ivonen.Ī Summer and Winter Junior National qualifier in the 100 and 200 backstrokes, Gonzalez competed at the Austin Grand Prix. Gonzalez also represented Venezuela internationally at the 2014 Pan-American Olympic Festival in Mexico, where she won silver in the 100 back and bronze in the 200 back. Gonzalez is the current 100 meter backstroke Junior National record-holder in Venezuela, having gone 1:03.68 to finish 13th overall at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto this past summer.
